Some thoughts on the 2025 Met Gala, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” and how my dad shaped my view of dressing as wellness, along with articles, podcasts, and social media stuff.
In regards to the title of this post I definitely can say that getting dressed is medicine, because, getting dressed is what preserved my sanity during the height of the pandemic when we were on lockdown down.
Same. I think it satisfied my need for control. Yes, the world was going through turmoil, but I could find a little peace in looking and feeling good. As they say, you don’t have to look like what you’re going through
I loved this post and I’m definitely looking forward to this year’s theme. As a native New Yorker, I hope to see many celebs wearing or paying homage to Dapper Dan.
This was so fun to read. The pics of you and your father are incredibly adorable. This stood out" If we view style, getting dressed, and fashioning ourselves as forms of self-care within that framework, Black dandyism—where Black men and others dress ostentatiously and boldly, taking up space—becomes one of many acts of preserving ourselves against personal and political perils." Taking up space is so political. Since the dawn of time the consideration of who is in and who is out reverberates through the personal consciousness. For that reason dressing absolutely is resistance. Thank you for the reminder.
I loved today’s piece and it reminded me of my own fashion journey. I hated the idea of dressing up as a kid because I was always put into dresses and feminine clothes that I hated. As an act of rebellion against my aunt and the women in my family I threw away all my dresses in middle school. For the first time I was presented with the idea of dressing for myself after they no longer had the power to tell me to put on a dress. High school and college is when I understood the power of dressing for yourself and the act of connecting with others through clothes. It was actually a close friend of mine whom I saw dress that made me think about clothing in a deep sociological way that began my love for clothes. It was the first time that clothing was so unique that I had to stop and think. It was this impression that moved me. As always I appreciate your words and I hope you continue. 💖
I love seeing these pics of my fly uncle 🫶🏾

Also my’hala’s recent interview with Elle had a beautiful nod to dandyism / grace jone esque suit! https://images.app.goo.gl/EHcuASDuMNFb2qsj8
